NEWS/Digital Media Delivery: Understanding Open Standards and Monitoring Tools With the BridgeTech Academy

Bridge Technologies has announced the next in its series of training courses designed to help digital and media TV operators understand and master monitoring and service quality control issues. The course, to be held in Oslo on Aug. 24-25, will place special emphasis on monitoring MPEG-2 transport streams PSI and DVB SI in relation to the open industry standards ETSI TR 101290 and ETSI TS 102 034.

“These standards are the baseline for monitoring digital media, and it’s vital to get a complete grasp of their significance and the way they inform the overall monitoring environment,” said Randouth Tillery, course leader for Bridge Technologies. “The Bridge Technologies courses give engineers and system designers the best possible understanding of both the broadcast and IP domains, the interactions between them, and practical working skills for sophisticated monitoring with the comprehensive end-to-end VideoBRIDGE environment.”

Developed in response to demand from digital media operators, the BridgeTech Academy provides technical personnel with the multidisciplinary operational expertise necessary for a complete understanding of the entire digital TV delivery chain and the VideoBRIDGE advanced monitoring environment. Training courses are provided at Bridge Technologies’ Oslo headquarters using a complete on-site transmission chain created for training and testing, or by arrangement at the operator’s facility.

The BridgeTech Academy is headed by Tillery, a veteran of digital and interactive TV operations management at Telenor, Zonavi, and Canal Digital. The courses draw on the expertise gathered by Bridge Technologies staff through decades at the front line of digital media development, and long experience of real-world commercial use of IP in broadcasting and interactive media delivery.

The courses are aimed at technical support engineers with some knowledge of IP and with either a broadcast or telco background. Course content will include:

• Relevant standards, unicast vs. multicast, IGMP
• Digital TV measurement techniques
• General considerations, standards
• What to measure, where to measure
• Packet drops, packet jitter
• Common network problems, common video problems
• Case studies, inter-arrival time, jitter robustness
• Stuffed vs. unstuffed streams
• The MediaWindow™
• Product training
• Probes, extractor, generator, VBC
